Having a strong libido and healthy sex drive is an important part of our well-being. It signifies healthy neurotransmitter and hormonal function and is a great way to relieve stress, feel connected (to others or yourself) and stimulate endorphins.
Unfortunately, so many women (and men) suffer from low libido, with research estimating about 35-40% of women having a low sex drive.
Having a low libido is a sign that something is not working properly, and while there are emotional and confidence influences at play, there are real physical factors involved, including: hormones, neurotransmitters, stress, xenoestrogens, nutritional deficiencies and menopause.
Fortunately, there are many things you can do to increase your libido. In this episode of S&STV, we talk about the factors that influence our libido and how you can increase your libido naturally.

Thank you for sharing that informative video. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have been taking levothyroxin for about 4 months. While my blood work levels have improved I still feel out of whack. I actually have a consultation with an endocrinologist today. I also have elevated antibodies which tends to be genetic in my family. My 11 year old daughter has recently started taking the same medicine for hashimotos thyroiditis. Can you advise me any questions that I should ask at my appointment today?
Hi Marybeth, That’s tough to answer without knowing more about your unique situation. I would say that if you feel like you are not receiving good answers from your endocrinologist, you seek out help from a Functional Medicine Doctor who may do a more thorough analysis on the root cause and take a holistic approach to managing your situation. Thanks so much for an informational video. I’m one of the unfortunate 35-40% of women with a low libido; always have been (I’m 42). Just in the last six months I’ve taken steps to address it. My first stop was a therapist to help me with the mental side of it and that has definitely helped. After my first meeting with her she suggested I get my hormones tested. Turns out I have very low testosterone – like I have a rating of 4 when normal is 48. I have started to use a testosterone gel and it’s hard to say how effective that is. I will continue to improve my diet and may look at herbs. Thanks again – it was just what I needed.

I bought my husband this book for Christmas last year called 101 nights of great sex. It really helped us just get out of a rut from 10 years of marriage and 2 very difficult to conceive kiddos. I’m still not lusting after “it” day and night but it has definitely lost that to-do list feel.
I agree with seeing a counsellor or therapist for mental issues. Sexual assault is unfortunately a huge issue for women. I’m currently seeing a therapist that also practices hypnotherapy. I was slightly skeptical going in, but I found that it’s actually pretty effective.
I’m also quitting my birth control for the first time since in 11 years….I’ve been taking it for acne since before I was even sexually active so I’m looking forward to seeing how my body reacts to the change.
