I'm happy to announce that Paleokits are on their way to Fort Bragg - all 500 of them. We'll be able to pack them up and bring them over with us next week, thanks to the generous contributions from of all of YOU!My company (the insurance shop who gets me from 9 - 5 Monday through Friday) is also sponsoring my efforts, covering my vacation time and making a donation to Operation Phoenix and Steve's Club. I'm happy to be able to give a little something back to both of these groups, whose support … [Read more...]
Operation Phoenix and Again Faster
First, an update on the Whole30 Sponsor a Soldier program. We've raised almost $2,000 to date - an amazing accomplishment, considering the program has only been active for a few days! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. I'd especially like to recognize Becky Strahan, CrossFitter, yoga instructor and owner of The MAT Yoga Studio in Richardson, TX. Becky and her husband Bill have been a huge supporter of this initiative, and I can't thank them enough for their encouragement, and … [Read more...]
Operation Iron Cross
I have pretty much the most exciting news in the history of Urban Gets Diesel. At the invitation of the United States Army, CrossFit is sending a small group of trainers to Afghanistan, to run the men and women from the 7th Special Forces Group through a series of CrossFit Gymnastics Certifications. We'll be flying out of Pope Air Force Base (in NC) on a C-17, with an estimated departure date of December 3rd. Three days later, we'll arrive at Bagram Air Base, and Vance Camp. We'll spend … [Read more...]
Karl’s Story
Let's end the week on an inspirational note. I've been chatting with Karl Schirrmacher, a Staff Sergeant in the Army and currently deployed in Iraq. Karl wrote to tell me about his efforts to change his diet, and the specific challenges he faces as a result of his deployment. After reading his note, I will never again bitch about having to drink my coffee black. Karl wrote:________Melissa,Our adventure started while surfing a CrossFit forum where I stumbled upon a link to the blog. I dug. I … [Read more...]
The Elevator Pitch
This past Sunday, my BFF Jenn (J. Spice, to all you 603'ers) and I had a deliciously girly day. We had a fantastic breakfast at this cute little cafe in Nashua, then drove down to Burlington to do some shopping. (There's a Nordstrom, and a Lululemon, and a Sephora at the Burlington Mall. It's pretty much Girly-Girl Heaven.) We hit Lulu last, figuring we might be there a while. So I'm in the dressing room, and I hear Jenn outside, talking to the Lulu-lady. The lady asks Jenn, "Do you do … [Read more...]
Intensity in-ˈten(t)-sə-tē (noun): An extreme degree of strength, force, energy or feeling
Apologies in advance, but this post brings The Return of the F-Bombs. From the author's perspective, they are deliberate, and essential. Since I was only in Virginia for a few days, I wanted to make the most of my time here. That meant sucking it up and deliberately (but carefully) overtraining while I was in town. The gymnastics cert, on its own, was a serious workout. Two full days of pull-ups, ring work, handstands and L-sits did a number on my core, and more significantly, my shoulders. … [Read more...]
Burpees vs. Cookies – nobody wins
Right now, I am supporting my friend Jenn in a "30 Day, No Grains, No Sugar" challenge. In fact, there have recently been a ton of 30 day diet challenges posted - on the CrossFit Message Boards, on Facebook, within individual CrossFit affiliates. The “No Sugar Challenge”, “Paleo Challenge”, “Zone challenge”… take your pick, because they are all up for the joining. The idea is to shock your dietary habits into behaving – giving the cold-turkey finger to food and drink that has a detrimental … [Read more...]
Are you CrossFit Enough?
A few months ago, I posted “A public apology to my Mom”, in response to a conversation I had with a CrossFit trainer about the use of profanity. On November 25th, Lisbeth Darsh posed a similar question on the Affiliate blog. (I’m going to pretend like she got the idea from me, because that would be a really awesome compliment.) Lis asked, “Does CrossFit overexert itself on the sexual innuendo? Or the "F" bomb? Or are some people just too uptight? Do you encourage this edginess at your … [Read more...]
Everybody lies
(Note – all quotes have been paraphrased, as I wasn’t able to document the exact conversation. I may have missed some of the wording, but the ideas are solid. Sincere thank you to Jon Gilson for allowing me to write about our private conversation.)Two weeks ago, I got to spend some one-on-one time with to Jon Gilson, owner of Again Faster. During our conversation, he mentioned that he hadn’t told a lie since he was 22 years old. Um, what? I made him repeat that, for clarification. … [Read more...]
A public apology to my Mom
I recently had a conversation with someone I truly like and respect, someone with a lot more CrossFit and coaching experience than I have. This person mentioned he had read my blog for the first time… and then referenced that it wasn’t exactly a “family show”. I started to laugh the comment off, but then I asked him to explain what he meant. And he did, tough-love lecture style. And it got me thinking.I use pretty colorful language when I write. I drop the f-bomb here like it’s my part time … [Read more...]
