I’ve been very lucky to have a physical therapist as my trainer. I’ve been aware of my own mobility, um, shortcomings for years now. My shoulders are all messed up from years of working at a desk, my hips don’t like to turn out because of who knows what, and my feet and ankles are starting to get cranky after a decade of 3-inch heels five days a week. We’ve been addressing these issues one at a time, as a supplement to my normal training routine. He does some PT magic on me, sure, but none of his “fixes” will take unless I take the initiative to maintain my newfound level of flexibility and range of motion. [...]

While treating physical therapy patients and training fitness clients, I find myself using similar approaches to teach people how to move. In the PT clinic, performing a movement, exercise, or stretch with correct technique can mean the difference between successful rehabilitation and exacerbation of symptoms, between progress and frustration. At some point in our lives, we’re likely to find ourselves over-trained, under-recovered, under-fed, under-slept, over-caffeinated, and (eventually) actually injured. Ideally, the early stages are the time to pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you, and take immediate action to ensure those nagging aches and pains don’t become a seriously limiting chronic injury. Today’s Whole30 check-in topic comes from a reader’s post. Heather wrote: “I am currently in the testing part of Whole30 (completed 30 days, and am now reinserting certain foods back in to see how they affect me). One thing I gave up during the Whole30 was my morning organic, sugar-free yogurt with salt-free almonds and sugar free granola. I am now eating Paleo except for this breakfast so I can test the way I feel and my performance during WODs. I had my first one yesterday and another one today. Physically, I feel good, and I performed well and felt good during yesterday's WOD... so I would like to know when I can declare my yogurt breakfast okay?” [...]

If you've been to a CrossFit Nutrition Certification, read Melissa's blog or browsed any of the more popular Paleo sites like Robb Wolf's or Loren Cordain's, you've heard all about the magical properties of fish oil. [...]

Sunday, 12 July 2009 Rest Day With all our recent talk of midline stability and putting heavy stuff overhead, we figured we should give you some science-y references from a really smart guy out in San Francisco. Kelly Starrett is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), and one of the original founders of San Francisco [...]

Sunday, 28 June 2009 Rest Day What is foam rolling? Foam Rollers are used both as a warm-up before a workout and as part of your post-workout recovery. Foam rollers (and other self massage items such as The Stick) are used to perform what is known as a self-myofascial release. Foam rolling provides greater improvements [...]

Sunday, 3 May 2009 Rest Day We’ve had a lot of grip-centric work lately – farmer’s walks, deadlifts, and most significantly, pull-ups. All of these movements – but especially the pull-ups – can wreak havoc on your hands. If you don’t take proper care of your hands, you’ll get blisters, raw skin and, finally, rips [...]
