Intensity in-ˈten(t)-sə-tē (noun): An extreme degree of strength, force, energy or feeling

February 25, 2009

Apologies in advance, but this post brings The Return of the F-Bombs. From the author's perspective, they are deliberate, and essential. Since I was only in Virginia for a few days, I wanted to make the most of my time here. That meant sucking it up and deliberately (but carefully) overtraining while I was in town. The gymnastics cert, on its own, was a serious workout. Two full days of pull-ups, ring work, handstands and L-sits did a number on my core, and more significantly, my shoulders. … [Read more...]

Science is hot

February 4, 2009

NOTE: This post is now front page news on Robb Wolf's web site. I have died and gone to Science-y heaven. The fourth member of our group this weekend was Mathieu Lalonde, from Cambridge, MA. In Matt's own words, "I have no background in nutrition and exercise. I'm a chemist with a lifelong interest in nutrition and human performance. My background allows me to understand the nutrition and exercise literature that I delve into as a hobby. I obtained my bachelor's degree in science with a … [Read more...]

In defense of Lulus

January 28, 2009

by Melissa "will somebody PLEASE make me an Ambassador?" Urban **Note: I don't often write something JUST for one sex or the other... my posts tend to be pretty gender-neutral. You may think today's write-up is directed at my female audience, but that is not true. It is directed to the females wearing the pants, AND the husbands and boyfriends who think you are bananas for shelling out that much money for a pair of "sweats".** There’s been a lot of buzz about the clothing company … [Read more...]

Burpees vs. Cookies – nobody wins

January 9, 2009

Right now, I am supporting my friend Jenn in a "30 Day, No Grains, No Sugar" challenge. In fact, there have recently been a ton of 30 day diet challenges posted - on the CrossFit Message Boards, on Facebook, within individual CrossFit affiliates. The “No Sugar Challenge”, “Paleo Challenge”, “Zone challenge”… take your pick, because they are all up for the joining. The idea is to shock your dietary habits into behaving – giving the cold-turkey finger to food and drink that has a detrimental … [Read more...]

Take the red pill

December 17, 2008

We all have off days, slow days, even bad days. But I rarely have a Bad Day of Epic Proportion. The BDoEP feels far, far different than just a plain old bad day. It feels like I have one of the Jolie-Pitt kids clinging to a leg (probably Maddox), Andrei Arlovsky trying to pin me in a cross slide and my Dad standing next to me huffing Pall Mall non-filters. All while I'm trying to do thrusters.Yesterday was one of those Days. The last time this happened, I wrote it off to a lack of recent … [Read more...]

Strong ˈstrȯŋ (adjective) : Having or marked by great physical power

December 15, 2008

Today I'll finish writing about my interview with Max Lewin of CrossFit East Bay. Below is an extension of the “Confessions of a CrossFit Hussy” posting from last week - additional thoughts from Max that developed into my new program. Some background, first... for the last six months, I’ve had a hard time balancing a strength focus with cardiovascular (met-con) performance. I’d go weeks where I would add weight to the bar on a regular basis, but quickly lose what felt like ALL my cardio … [Read more...]

Are you CrossFit Enough?

December 2, 2008

A few months ago, I posted “A public apology to my Mom”, in response to a conversation I had with a CrossFit trainer about the use of profanity. On November 25th, Lisbeth Darsh posed a similar question on the Affiliate blog. (I’m going to pretend like she got the idea from me, because that would be a really awesome compliment.) Lis asked, “Does CrossFit overexert itself on the sexual innuendo? Or the "F" bomb? Or are some people just too uptight? Do you encourage this edginess at your … [Read more...]

Everybody lies

November 6, 2008

(Note – all quotes have been paraphrased, as I wasn’t able to document the exact conversation. I may have missed some of the wording, but the ideas are solid. Sincere thank you to Jon Gilson for allowing me to write about our private conversation.)Two weeks ago, I got to spend some one-on-one time with to Jon Gilson, owner of Again Faster. During our conversation, he mentioned that he hadn’t told a lie since he was 22 years old. Um, what? I made him repeat that, for clarification. … [Read more...]

A public apology to my Mom

October 29, 2008

I recently had a conversation with someone I truly like and respect, someone with a lot more CrossFit and coaching experience than I have. This person mentioned he had read my blog for the first time… and then referenced that it wasn’t exactly a “family show”. I started to laugh the comment off, but then I asked him to explain what he meant. And he did, tough-love lecture style. And it got me thinking.I use pretty colorful language when I write. I drop the f-bomb here like it’s my part time … [Read more...]
