We have another big announcement in preparation for our Whole9-sponsored Whole30 program starting August 1st. (Did you miss our first big announcement? In summary, yay, spuds!) Our second announcement is related to the new Whole30 program rules, and features our New York Times bestselling book, It Starts With Food.
It Starts With Food has a spiffy new redesign, and one important update.
Don’t panic—95% of the book is exactly the same. (And red wine, chocolate, and pancakes are still off-limits. Sorry not sorry.) Read on for the details.
A New Look for ISWF
Once we realized we had to change the text of It Starts With Food to accommodate the new Whole30 potato rule, we started thinking, what else might we want to change? A review of the text told us there wasn’t much we needed to revise to the actual content. The science is still on point, and our recommendations still hold fast. (We did make some updates to the supplement section, but those are minor.) So other than the new Whole30 program rules around potatoes, chips, french fries, and table salt, the book is basically the same It Starts With Food you know and love.
One thing we’ve been wanting to do for a while now, however, is change the way it looks. When we first designed the book three years ago, our audience was young, trendy, and very familiar with our brand and our voice. The grunge-y, edgy vibe of ISWF was just right at the time, and reflected the relationship we had with our readers.
Since then, our audience has grown faster than we ever could have imagined. Word of mouth about the stunning results the program has to offer brings your mothers, fathers, grandparents, and co-workers to our website and It Starts With Food. These folks aren’t familiar with Whole9 or “Dallas and Melissa.” They don’t know us, our voice, our personalities—all they know is someone told them they have to read this book.
For you, our much-loved new audience, we wanted ISWF to be more welcoming, and a little calmer. The new look is softer, cleaner, more accessible. (It also matches our new Whole9 website, which was another goal of the redesign.) We’ve kept the signature cover look, the interior grey boxes for “callout” information, and the straight-talk. It just looks a little more grown up, and (we hope) more inviting.
It Starts With Food
For those of you wondering whether you need to buy the new version of ISWF, we’re letting you preview our full Author’s Note here for you today. The summary: the material in the updated version is 95% the same as the original ISWF, save for the Whole30 program rules (and some small tweaks to our supplement recommendations), so feel free simply to note the changes in your current version and move on.
The new version of It Starts With Food will be officially released on Tuesday, July 29th, and will be available at all major retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
And the next site-wide Whole30 program starts August 1st! We’ll have even more resources available for you between now and then, and plenty of reminders about the new Whole30 rules and ISWF updates. So stay tuned, and as always, thank you for your support.

Your link to the official rules still lists white potatoes under the “no” category. Just thought you might want to be aware of the oversight. :)
Thanks, Rose! We’re cleaning up all the little details and appreciate your help.
thanks for making the author’s note available! you mention that you made a small tweak to the supplements section; are you going to make those changes available to those of us who own the original book? i use your supplement recommendations as a guideline for my own supplement protocol and am very interested in knowing what has changed. thanks!
Rose, that has been corrected. Thanks!
Esteban, we’re not making the small tweaks we made throughout the book available here, sorry. You can check the new edition out from your local library to read through the supplement tweaks if it’s that important to you!
Melissa
How do I sign up for the Aug 1st Whole30? I’m guessing there is a group for support and all that good stuff??
Tami, visit http://whole30.com/new and run through the steps. You can register for the Whole30 Daily newsletter starting August 1st, join our Forum, and prep/prepare over the next two weeks to join our group.
Best,
Melissa
Would love to see the book available via Audible.
Kara, an audio version is in our plans–we just haven’t had time to do the reading ourselves. Hopefully later this year!
Melissa
You’re welcome, glad to help! I’m sure it is very tedious and time consuming to make all the changes. Keep up the great work! My husband and I are stoked to do our second Whole30 in August.
Thank you for all you do! :)
@Rose – Good luck on your 2nd Whole30!
Please make an audio version!!!
Thank you! :)
I like your post very much i had nice time while reading your post
I am on day 8 of the whole 30 diet, and will stick to it for more then the 30 days. My question is should I buy the book? Is there more info and stuff in the book.
Thanks John
Hi John,
Congrats on starting the Whole30! I did my first one in June. I can highly recommend the book, it is full of so much amazing information. Hope you feel as great as I did during the program.
Mindy
Mindy is right! The book is full of so much information and the why behind it all.
I love that the book needed a little makeover to fit your ever expanding audience! I dug the original (and still do) but I also fall under your initial intention. I think my mom will find this cleaner look way more approachable. Congrats to y’all!
Hi! I’m interested on starting aug 1st, but need to know if I can go this challenge as I’m still breast feeding? Where can I find meal suggestions? Also I’ve downloaded all the links to shopping, eating out etc. I don’t see condiments anywhere are they not allowed?
Alexandra,
This is probably the best thing you can do while breastfeeding. You just want to make sure you’re eating enough.
Head over to our forum, http://www.forum.whole9life.com, and search for your question there as well. There are a lot of helpful mothers can give you their experience.
Some Whole30 approved condiments can be found here: http://whole30.com/whole30-approved/
And here’s more about everything that is approved, with specific questions about condiments: http://whole30.com/2013/06/the-official-can-i-have-guide-to-the-whole30/

I’m super excited to learn more about whole9 and the whole30 program! I used your book link to purchase your book a few weeks ago and the link took me to the old version of the book on Amazon. I unfortunately bought it not realizing it wasn’t the new version. It looks like the link still takes you there instead of where I believe it should (to the new version of the book). Hopefully this makes sense :). With that being said is there any way of being able to see what the added revisions were to the whole30 program? I do I need to now buy the new book? Thanks!
Hi Jaclyn, sorry about that mix-up. Amazon is supposed to transfer the old to the new version, but it hasn’t happened yet. Where did you click the link that went to the old version? The new version is 95% the same as old version. You can read the details here: http://whole9life.com/2014/07/new-iswf/
