Congratulations! Your Whole30® is officially over – not that you’ll be running right out and diving into a box of donuts, of course. Whether it’s your first, second or tenth Whole30, this article is for you – part homework, part sound-off, and part pat-on-the-back.
Homework #1: Take a Picture

First, our newest initiative. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, so we’re gathering photos to document your Whole30 achievements. It’s simple:
- Write your accomplishment(s) on a 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper (held horizontally) with a bright, bold marker.
- Keep it short (and legible). Statements like “I lost 16 pounds,” “No more seasonal allergies!” or “I’m off my diabetes medication” are perfect.
- Take a photo of you holding your sign, from the waist up. (Don’t forget to SMILE!)
- Email your photo to us (whole30@whole9life.com) – and feel free to show off (we mean post your photo) to our Whole30 Facebook page.
Get to snappin’, because you never know who YOU will inspire with your Whole30 Success Story.
Homework #2: Share Your Story

Additional assignments… because we’d REALLY like to hear about your Whole30 results. Please take a few minutes to contribute your story to:
- Our ONE QUESTION Whole30 weight loss survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/whole30weightloss

- Link to your own wrap-up blog post on the Whole30 Facebook page, so we can ALL read about your Whole30 experience – lessons learned, results achieved, and “go-forward” plans.
Homework #3: Prepare For Your Whole9 Life

Next assignment - read (or -re-read) Chapter 20 (Strategies for Long-Term Success) in It Starts With Food. This chapter outlines our plan for turning your Whole30 into your Whole9 Life, ensuring you don’t permanently slip back into old unhealthy habits.
Don’t have the book yet? These articles will get you started, and the “Life After Your Whole30″ section of our Whole30 Forum will keep you going.

This is my second Whole30 (this one was slightly more successful than the last). I slipped a little bit towards the end of the month, but I can say it was such a rewarding journey that I am going to continue on! I have a wedding dress to get into in 95 days and then a lifetime to spend with the love of my life. You can see my final results at:
http://thedrunkenpigs.com/2012/01/31/the-results/
My third turn with The Whole 30, but first with husband and skinny, skinny daughter. I’m happy to report it was a success for all (with some major gripes, but still good eating). The difference for me this time is that it was less about a big change and more about a great reminder that you are what you eat – so eat well. Plus, I learned that I actually like cooking thanks to Well Fed.
My post on my third Whole 30 adventure:

Question…..
I’m on day 9 of the Whole 30 and it’s going well so far.
I have a question about bacon. The bacon that we normally buy (it’s organic & local but still packaged and sold at the grocery store) has listed as the ingredients – pork, sugar.
So, since the Whole30 is ‘no added sugar’, we’ve stopped eating this bacon. I’ve searched high and low for bacon without sugar but it’s just not possible. I even asked a butcher that I know and trust that cures their own bacon, and even they use sugar. They said that the sugar is added to the brine. Not much sugar, but sugar nonetheless.
There are a bunch of people at our gym that are doing a Paleo Challenge and they all seem to be adding bacon to everything lately (it is delicious afterall). Admittedly, their challenge is not as strict as the Whole 30 (I prefer the Whole 30 BECAUSE it is so strict), but we were discussing whether bacon (unless you cure it yourself somehow) is “paleo” or not, and whether it is “Whole 30 approved” or not.
Some guidance on this would be appreciated.
Love your blog by the way! It’s my homepage actually and helps keep my health and nutrition at the forefront of my life and my decisions.
thanks
Hi Rosita!
Any bacon with added sugar is out, out, out. You can, however, ask your butcher for fresh sliced – also called “green” pork belly. It’s the cut of pork that they use to make bacon and is just as tasty without the cure. You can even try curing it yourself if you want!
Too many results for an elevator speech. I broke it all down

Endlessly grateful to you all!
Down nine pounds, much better sleep, feeling strong and climbing well! The biggest change for me is just feeling WAY better-not hating my body when I look in the mirror, not avoiding looking in mirrors, not feeling bloated and sluggish, and not being obsessed with the candy bowl if it is in the room with me. Sugar no longer calls my name until I answer it! I don’t want to stop eating like this and I don’t plan to except for *really* special days (no more “I’ve have a hard day and I need something special to eat, so today is ‘special order-a-pizza Tuesday”). My birthday and Thanksgiving are two special days for sure. Others I may have to feel out a bit.
One awesome thing is that in the last week of the Whole30 my boyfriend actually stopped chewing tobacco–something he has wanted to do for years but has just not been able to do in the past. He’s on day seven of being clean! Somehow it feels connected to the Whole30 to both of us; we aren’t sure why.
I thought his comment was really interesting. He pointed out that if either of us had suggested he give up alcohol, sugar, grains, dairy, legumes, and tobacco all at the same time the other would have immediately said “hey, one thing at a time, okay? Baby steps.” Yet, here we are–both complete Whole30 and him tobacco-free 7 also!
I’m getting an Error 404 code when I click on the link to the large graphic for Facebook. Is it just me?
Nope – CORRECTED! Thanks, Melissa
I’m down 3 lbs, acne…gone. PMS…GONE!! I’m sleeping better than I have in years. Hair is growing thicker (I had lost a TON of hair over the last year). And better yet, I have learned that I don’t need bread, sugar, sweets, caffeine etc and eating those things actually make me feel sick.
I started this journey responding to a challenge made by my sister. She does a “cleanse” each January and asked if I wanted to join her. She directed me to the Whole 30 site in order to get some guidance. Little did I know how much I would learn through this process. Reading labels, trying new foods, and actually not gagging on a brussel sprout were some of the highlights. In the end, I not only lost 16lbs & 8 inches (combination of waist & hips), but I gained the self-awareness of the type of foods that my body responds well to, as well as the knowledge that I have wheel power beyond my imagination!
Thank you Melissa & Dallas. The knowledge you provide is unmeasurable!
I’m down 13 pounds, sleeping great, feeling great – WAHOO!

I know regular, sugar cured, store bought bacon is a no-no, but what about beef bacon with no sugar? The only ingredients are: beef, water, Celtic sea salt, spices. I bought some from US Wellness meats and will happily save it until after the challenge, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask!
Looking forward to your response.
Jenifer,
That beef bacon is 100% Whole30 okay. Enjoy!
Melissa
Day 5 of my first Whole30, and I feel amazing. I can’t believe how much my MOOD has improved. I’m happier, less anxious, and more energetic. I feel clean. I’ve been running (this makes my dog happy, because he has a lot of energy and we usually walk), and yesterday I ran two miles pretty much all the way through, aside from my dog’s pee breaks. I can’t remember the last time I did that. I stretched, and miraculously, I wasn’t sore today, so we ran another mile this morning. I’m so excited to see what other changes occur, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to start a blog to document them all. Stay tuned!
Closing out Day 21 as we speak (type?)! No slip-ups (so far!) and closing in on the home stretch. Most interesting thing so far is that the nagging arthritis in my back hasn’t been nagging quite as loudly for the last week and a half. WooHoo!!
Kate – this program has a huge impact on mood and general mental health. Keep us posted!
Mark – I will DEFINITELY want you to check in with me when your 30 days are up – we’d love to hear how the program did with your arthritis symptoms! In fact, I was just talking to someone today with RA who needs a little more convincing… maybe your story will help!
Best,
Melissa
I lost 20 pounds and almost 10 inches. You can check out my wrap up post here – http://jeffscrazyidea.com/2012/02/finished-the-whole-30-30-days-20-pounds-and-9-inches/
It has been a good month and I feel fantastic!
I completed Whole 30 in January and am officially a Paleo convert! My boyfriend and I each lost 9 pounds, exactly!

I got 5 friends to join me on my Whole30. Each of them lost a minimum 8 lbs with the most weight loss at 15 lbs. I carefully studied the Whole30 Success Guide, following it to the letter even while on business travel. I learned a lot about making healthier food choices, including reading labels for sneaky sugars and processed vegetable oils, eliminating all sugar substitutes from my diet (no more gum during workouts, Splenda in my tea, or Diet Hansens), and now buy only grass-fed, pastured, or cage free meat, poultry, and eggs. Meat/veggie muffins and homemade beef jerky are staples for on-the-go, and coconut in every shape and form is EVERYWHERE! These changes, while making me feel overall healthier and allowing my arthritic knees to complete my first spinning class in two years, have not lead to measurable weight loss. I am happy for the positive results but would have liked to have seen some weight loss. I’m learning to embrace my post menapausal body, not worry about the number on the scale so much, and actually heard myself saying to myself at the gym the other day, “You are a BEAST!” I plan to keep eating this way as a rule, but will enjoy a glass of red wine, a piece of dark chocolate, and other occasional treats when I feel the need. I’m 3 days past my Whole30 ended, and haven’t yet. I had to laugh when I said to a co-Whole30 friend the other day, I have some meat/veggie muffins in the oven because I had some bison that needed to be used up. Ha – S**t Whole 30ers Say!
Renee,
Those results – all of them – are awesome! Any chance I can get you all to participate in a group shot (or individual shots) for our photo project above? We’re really hoping to collect 100 photos for our collection.
As for weight loss, that will come with time. You must be patient – your health history plays a HUGE role in today’s metabolism. Even if you are eating better, you still have years of past behaviors to overcome. If you’re feeling so much better, able to move easier and work out more effectively, that will go a long way towards body composition changes down the line. You just have to be patient, and stay the course.
Well done! Melissa
On my 4th day, I stopped needing to take a nap during the day. I was always tired, a little sad, and just go-go-go and I realized that my stupid hormones were acting up and making me feel terrible. I started going to http://www.crossfitfiveflags.com in July 2011 and did the Whole30 challenge with that group. I lost 1″ around my waist, gained 1lb. muscle (yes!!! I didn’t have anything to lose), and all of my bloodwork results came back amazingly better!
I started cooking better for my family and hope to get my husband going on this adventure when he returns from deployment.
Life is healthier, happier, less-stressful now. My pms was pretty terrible but my period was different/lighter. (TMI!)
I love veggies and have dinner for breakfast sometimes and sometimes, it’s just fun to be different! I have a new found self respect and am proud to say I accomplished this goal.
Life is just better!
Angela
I finished my first ever Whole30 yesterday and I am so proud of myself for getting through the whole program with few slip ups.
The program has taught me to always read labels! I’ve found that in Australia it’s REALLY hard to get things like bacon, fish sauce or mustard that do not have sugar in them. They even add sugar to smoked slamon over here! It’s ridiculous.
I lost weight on the program, I feel really healthy and I’ve found a new way to live and eat. I never felt hungry or deprived and I was doing Crossfit 3 times a week, so it’s obvious that you just don’t need to eat all that other crap!
I used to struggle to get out of bed in the mornings and would be half asleep at my desk in the afternoons, but now I wake up before my alarm and my energy levels are completely stable throughout the day.
If anyone is interested, I have a blog of my experiences, including some horrible before and after photos! http://www.thefoodinator.blogspot.com
Thank you so much for the program, I would say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my health.
So I’m feeling a little disappointed. Yesterday was Day 30 and today is Day 31. I waited to weigh myself until today just to complete the full 30 days, and I’ve…gained two pounds. I had hoped to lose between five and ten. I don’t want to go back to my old way of eating. I like eating simple, clean foods, although I am excited to be able to relax a little bit about oils at restaurants!
Still: Has anyone had this experience? I’m not dangerously overweight, and I will say that my body feels better (my clothes seem to fit better, which is why I thought I HAD lost weight), but I’ve been trying to shed those pounds for a few years now. I’d love some advice.
Kate,
Throw away your ******* scale.
That $20 hunk of junk from Target is suggesting that your Whole30 was a failure – and blinding you to the other results you have most certainly experienced. How’s your sleep, your stress, your energy, your mood? How’s your performance in the gym, your skin, your symptoms or conditions? You don’t even mention that, because you’re so focused on the number on the scale! (Which, by the way, tells you nothing about how your body composition has changed in the last 30 days, which I’d say it most certainly HAS, as evidenced that your clothes are fitting better).
Honestly, I hate to see people stuck in scale mode. The sooner you ditch the idea that the scale is your ultimate measure of success, the healthier and happier you’ll be.
Best,
Melissa
Kate, I hear your frustration! I finished my Whole30 about 3 weeks ago. Everyone else who I did it with lost weight and I was disappointed to see that my weight had essentially stayed the same. While not the only measure of success, it certainly is one that I was hoping to see. My weight had been slowly creeping up for the past three or so years to the point that I was 12 lbs. over my average adult weight and up about 25 lbs from my lowest about six years ago after a brief stint with Atkins (not a sustainable diet and not enough focus on overall nutrition). I was already pretty active, watched my carbs and sugar, and at 53, 5’4 1/2″, weighed about 142 when I started. For the most part, aside of an occasional glass of wine, not stressing over what kind of oil is used on the occasional meal out, and a couple other really minor transgressions, I have stuck to the plan since I finished my Whole30 – I really like this way of eating and feel like I’m being really good to my body! I have dropped about 3 lbs since then and am happy to see the scale moving in the right direction. I am working on enjoying the other benefits I’m seeing – less knee pain, feeling like I’m fueling my body with the right stuff, feeling more fit. However, I can’t negate aesthetics, and would really like to lose weight! I’m keeping with it – I feel like it’s my best chance at this point for overall health.
Melissa: Thanks so much for your honest response. And you’re right, I have noticed improvements: my skin is definitely better, my clothes definitely fit better, and I feel more comfortable in my body. I’ve recommitted to yoga, and went to five classes this week. The last three were a heated flow, and honestly, I haven’t felt much muscle soreness. I have no plans to abandon this way of eating, aside from going out and not worrying about oils (and maybe having some dessert on occasion, although I’m worried it will make me feel hungover). But I did gain fifteen pounds a few years ago and wanted to make a dent in it. Old habits die hard. The number on the scale has always been an issue for me and I guess I can’t quite let go of it yet. I do really appreciate your encouragement.
Renee: Thank you for your response. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who has had this reaction. I’m glad to hear that you’ve stuck with it and now the numbers are going down. Honestly, I like this way of eating–what could be bad about avoiding processed food? And it really does wonders for the skin, I find.
Kate,
I’m so glad you saw that as encouragement, as that is exactly how it was intended. (In fact, you inspired today’s Whole9 blog post!)
Best,
Melissa
Melissa,
So flattered to have inspired a blog post! Thanks–it was a very helpful read.
Best,
Kate
Hi, just wondering when you’re doing the drawing for the iPad 2? My results from doing the Whole30 have been awesome…. but and iPad 2 would just make things THAT much better! Hehehehe….
Lisa, we’ve extended the entry period for a few more weeks to collect more entries. We’ll certainly close entries by May 1st, but likely earlier. Don’t worry, if you win, we’ll be sure to find you to tell you so!
Dallas
Ooh…extended! I’m sending in my family pic…hopefully my 1 yr old doesn’t try to eat the paper while I’m taking the pic, lol…interesting.
Please do, Sam! We’d love to see some kiddos in our mix.
Melissa
working on a blog post about our experience now…taking the pic tomorrow. I want to sign up as an affiliate…we’re sending so many clients this way and have my whole team learning about the Whole30. You guys rock!
Angela and Emma – so sorry we missed your stories! You should both be so proud of your efforts. I love hearing about all the things that have changed – cooking for your family, improved energy, happier moods. Thank you both for sharing, and congratulations!
Sam, we can’t wait to read your wrap-up, and would love to have you on board as a nutrition partner. Shoot us a note at nutritionguide@whole9life.com and we’ll send you the information.
Best,
Melissa
I just finished my Whole30, and I feel pretty good about it. Didn’t lose as much weight as I hoped I would (only about 6 lbs.), but I wasn’t exceptionally over weight to begin with, and haven’t been exercising a whole lot. Most the energy I gained I expended on spring cleaning projects. I do look and feel a whole lot better. I’m definitely going to keep up with the new way of eating and try to continue my progress. I hope to soon gain even more energy with which to exercise, which I still don’t do a whole lot. I’m more confident than ever that I can get myself into the kind of shape and mental place I’d like to be in.
Thanks for the great program guys!
~Dana
I am currently on Day 21 of Whole30 and am wondering why I am getting a light period when I shouldn’t be getting it for another couple weeks. I am on birth control and normally very regular. The same thing happened to my sister-in-law, so we are wondering if you know why? Thanks!
^^^Sorry if that’s a weird question or place to post it! I just didn’t know where I could post random questions like that.
Susie,
I experienced the same thing! I finished my whole30 on the 21st, and had a period (weeks before I should) during my last week and a half of my whole 30….It stopped finally, but wonder if its related to the whole30 too?
Susie and Chelsea, the Whole30 is, in part, about resetting your hormonal balance. Insulin and cortisol in particular play major roles in female sex hormone balance, so it’s not surprising that your cycle would be in fluctuation in the middle of your Whole30. It’s not uncommon, so don’t worry – most folks find that their cycles (and PMS symptoms) are far more regular and manageable after a few months of eating healthy foods than ever before, but there may be a transition getting there.
Best,
Melissa
I finished my first Whole30 on March 7th and was so happy with the results. I lost 9.5 lbs, my skin is clearer, my energy is so much more even throughout the day, and the blood sugar dips and spikes that I’d had for years are gone!
I have continued to stick with the whole30 guidelines, because I love feeling this healthy and don’t want to go back to how used to feel. The only problem that I’m having right now is that I am definitely overweight and would really like some more weight to come off. In the last 3 weeks it really doesn’t feel like I am still losing any weight – my clothes are fitting just the same as they did 3 weeks ago. It’s just disappointing. Is there anything in particular that I could be doing to help this along?
Thanks,
Tamara.
Tamara, diet isn’t the only factor involved in weight loss, and given your individual context and health history, it may not be the biggest factor. Things like sleep, stress, exercise and recovery all play a huge role. In addition, if you have a history of yo-yo dieting or health issues, it’s going to take a whole lot longer for the weight to come off in a sustainable and healthy fashion.
You would probably benefit from a one hour consult, but if that’s not in your budget right now, read this post and start looking at some of your other lifestyle factors. Perhaps focusing on sleeping more, eliminating stress and exercising smarter (not necessarily harder) will help. http://whole9life.com/2011/09/whole9-health-equation/
Best,
Melissa
Melissa-
Please help me understand what happens when we have a history of yo-yo dieting, that impacts how much longer it takes for weight to come off in a healthy way. I have this issue. I need some hope that it will eventually happen . What we call “the magic”. :=)
I completed Whole30 on Mar21. Lost no weight. Clothes feel the same. It felt discouraging. I feel happy about keeping my sugar dragon away through Whole30. Success…yay!
I am continuing for Whole45 by adding eggs to the eliminate list to see if that is an issue. It is starting to feel hard because I have not gotten more results.
Explanation for this weight loss resistance would be greatly appreciated….
Luv your posts….always full of sound reason and science!
Imogene
Melissa,
Thanks for the whole9-health-equation link! My sleep has been slipping lately – too many late nights, so I’ll work on on getting in more sleep first and see how that goes. If that doesn’t work, I’ll be sure to try out a 1 hr consult.
Thanks for the information!
Tamara.
I wanted to post here because I’ve had this page bookmarked since the beginning of January and had full intentions of preparing pictures and summaries and all the wonderful goodness of my Whole30 experience in January… and again with my husband in Feb/March. Life sort of got in the way, we had a loss and additional tragic information bombard the family and we were never able to take/post our pictures of success. I was finally able to finish my blog summary and wanted to include it… and will also post it out to the Forum. Thanks for such an amazing program – it is so wonderful to see the impact it has on so many people’s lives!

Dania: Wonderful experience! I love how Matt’s shelf changed from Quaker granola bars to fish oil and coconut flakes! It must feel wonderful to have him more on board with you, and to see the positive changes in him as well. Thank you for sharing, best of luck to you both.
Melissa
Day 15 on the Whole 30! Can’t believe the last 15 days have passed so quickly. Feeling great. Biggest change … my pants are loose! No bloat! I can actually suck it in! Ha. Really … feeling so good. Actually stopped thinking about going on a diet. No need! Amazed that I was able to give up my couple glasses of wine each evening … and have not had any sugar. NONE! Kudo’s to me. 15 days to go … I’ll be checking in with my actual weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol numbers.
I just finished my first Whole30 in August 2012, and it was such an incredible experience! Here’s my post about it:
http://www.gritandglamour.com/2012/09/09/reflections-on-whole30/
Done with my first Whole30 and just starting my whole life with paleo!
http://storiesandsweetpotatoes.com/2012/09/11/my-whole30/
My story started years ago when I was diagnosed with Celiac after a horrible medical disaster (go doctors!). I’ve been a Celiac for 8 years now and during that time period I’ve repeatedly gained the same amount of weight. At 5’6″, I capped out at 165 lbs twice now. The first time around, I grudgingly did a low glycemic calorie counting diet and lost 30 of it and promptly gained it all back. The second time around was more complicated.
Not only did I get a yearly blood test for my insurance done that showed climbing liver enzyme numbers but also a plethora of other highs and lows…numbers that continued to worsen over the next six months. This was in addition to right upper quadrant pain (right where my liver is) that I’d had intermittently over 8 years that was becoming more frequent and painful. When January 2012 began, I decided it was time to lose weight and see if that helped with the pain and the numbers because paying astronomical amounts of money for medical tests was yielding no results – I was apparently normal even though I felt awful, was depressed, in pain and stressed out.
I cut out caffeine and artificial sugar right away and then tried calorie counting (and lost 17 lbs). It was absolutely painful to monitor and record everything I ate. It was the reason I stopped doing it the last time because I hated it. I had to find something else. So, in my searching, I found the Whole30 challenge and while it seemed strict, it seemed doable. So, at 148 lbs with a goal of 135 lbs (dream goal of 125 lbs), I committed. And I have never been so happy with a diet in my life. When I finished my first whole30, I not only achieved my goal weight but then I lost and additional 10 lbs to achieve my dream goal of 125 lbs – a weight I never believed I could ever be. I now happily and effortlessly fluxuate between 122 lbs – 125 lbs. I eat until I’m full and I don’t feel like I’m going without.
I gladly adopted this as my new way of eating because I felt better, happier and more energetic. I thought it was a load of BS when people would write in on here saying the Whole30 changed their relationship with food or that their bodies naturally achieved a weight healthy for them without effort but I’m now a believer and a huge spokesperson for this program. I’ve currently got my entire family on it (parents, brother and his family…working on my husband, haha!) and a handful of my co-workers interested in it or going to start it.
So, in short, I lost 22 lbs, felt improvements in sleep, my mood, PMS, acne, my liver enzymes and all other blood issues went down to normal and I no longer have that right upper quadrant pain. I used to love cheese but I no longer miss dairy or grains. I still love my sugar but I understand how I react to it better and moderate it appropriately. I get excited about cooking (thanks to Well Fed!) and trying new foods more than ever before. I honestly believe it was a reset to my metabolism as well. So, thank you to those of you that run this site. It really did change my life.
Thank you so much for sharing your stories!
@Jean: I hope your 30 days went well!
@Grit and Glamour: A belated thank you – you’ve been sending TONS of people to our site and our program. We appreciate you helping us to spread the Good Food word!
@Stories and Sweet Potatoes: Wonderful write-up! So happy for the positive changes you’ve seen in your life.
@Holly: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, and with our readers. Your story is a wonderful example of how making those last few changes can really make all the difference in your quality of life. We are happy for you!
Best,
Melissa
Finished my Whole45 and ready to do another (waiting until January and bringing my sister with me!). Here’s the results post I wrote about it. Thank you guys!
