A new Whole30, and a Paleo Magazine Feature

We’ve got some exciting Whole30 plans in the works for the remainder of 2011, so we thought we’d give you a preview here today.  First…

The Whole30, Version 5.0

We’ll be kicking off our last official Whole30 of the year on Monday, October 24th, to run until Wednesday, November 23rd – the day before Thanksgiving.  We’ve been running through the program line by line, and thinking critically about each and every “rule” we employ.  As a result, we’re going to have one major rule change, which we’ll announce when we preview the new version on our site on Monday, October 17th.

You’ll have a week to plan, prepare and order your Whole30 Success Guide in preparation for the new version of the program.  (And yes, we’ll be modifying the Success Guide and the Spanish version of the Whole30 program for the new program.  If you’ve got an old version of the Success Guide, there is no need to repurchase – just note the one rule change.)

The timing for the Whole30 Version 5.0 is deliberate – we want you to get your nutrition in line before the holiday madness begins, and remind yourself how good squeaky-clean eating feels before the temptations roll in.  Which brings me to our next announcement…

Melissa’s Paleo Magazine Feature

Melissa wrote a special feature for the November edition of Paleo Magazine, called “The 12 30 Days of Christmas.”  In her article, she makes the case against taking on a 30 day Paleo challenge during the holiday season.  Surprising, coming from the tough-love champion of the Whole30 program?  In the article, Melissa discusses the three reasons why a holiday Whole30 is a bad idea.

You’ll have to subscribe to the magazine to read Melissa’s article (or use their clickable map to find a copy near you) – so we’re giving you the heads-up today so you can more effectively plan for your holiday season.

So stay tuned to the 9 Blog for the new Whole30 program (previewing on October 17th), and click on over to Paleo Magazine to register for your subscription today. Excited? Curious? Want to take a guess at our one rule change? Drop thoughts to comments.

Hey guys! Super excited for the new Whole30… it’ll be good to keep me from eating any Halloween candy haha :-)

Also definitely curious as to what the change is… I’m going to guess that it involves limiting fruit consumption (as some tend to be really sugary and too much can have a harmful affect on the body) But I’ll have to wait and see!

My guess will be the limitations of N6-fats (Almonds, Walnuts mostly) as per Robb Wolf’s latest article on N6 vs. N3.

    Can’t wait to throw down for this challenge. I’d planned a November 15th – December 15th Whole30.

Recent follower of your blog, so pardon any ignorance, but how are endurance sports (like marathon training) generally done while on the Whole 30 challenge? I am really wanting to try the program, but cannot sacrifice any issues while I am in the last 6 weeks of marathon training.

    Thanks!

Perfect timing, might just join you for that one! #Number3

can’t wait to start this whole 30

  6. Melissa @ Whole9 6 October, 2011 at 4:27 pm #

Good guesses so far, but remember the point of the Whole30 is to teach you how to make better food choices, not dictate how much you should eat. We provide plenty of guidance in our Whole30 Success Guide as to how much fruit is too much, and how to minimize your N6 intake by making smart fat choices based on the “fat hierarchy” in our Shopping Guide. So… no winners yet.

Badier, nice to have one of our Envoys joining the Whole30 group! I’m sure your experience will prove invaluable around here later this month.

I bet it’s gonna incorporate “safe starches” (i.e. white potatoes, white rice, other tubers) some of which have historically been off limits for a whole 30. Safe starches are trending up in the paleo world right now.

  8. Andrea 6 October, 2011 at 6:49 pm #

Maybe adding an exercise piece to the program?

  9. Leigh 6 October, 2011 at 7:40 pm #

You’re going to take away our caffeine, aren’t you!

  10. Melissa @ Whole9 6 October, 2011 at 7:42 pm #

Leigh – NO. No, we are not going to take away caffeine. Although we’ve been criticized in the past for letting caffeine be a part of the program… but we stand firm in our decision to allow the java. Mostly because we don’t want an uprising on our hands.

I’m gonna go with raw dairy as my guess. I’ll be joining you for the next Whole30, although I actually started back at it on Tuesday.

I am so in for this whole 30…perfect time to get everything dialed back in. Plus a happy/strong well nurished body going into the holiday season is never a bad thing…more capable of dealing with stress and germs!

I am on Day 5 of a “Whole 47″ (up until the day of my next powerlifting meet–Nov. 19) so it will be good to get inspiration from others once the official Whole 30 starts. I did a Whole 30 in March/April and it went very well. Since then I have made a couple of false starts, but this time the commitment is there again. I’m hoping for some P.R.s at the meet! Once thing I am doing better this time (so far) is including a couple of veggies with every meal (I finally bought the Success Guide with the Meal Simple template). And I am eating 3 meals where I often skipped dinner before. I’m not guessing what the change is but I wonder if it will affecgt what I am doing?

I do have one question about “high intensity exercise.” The Guide says to eat that extra PWO meal after high intensity exercise, but it’s not defined. I work out MWF, and it generally consists of biking to the gym (4 miles), warmup, about 30 minutes of max-effort type lifting (heavy, lower reps), followed by a combo of a few exercises, then stretch/roll. The combo is “high intensity” but relatively short in duration. This close to the meet it’s maybe 5-7 minutes (earlier in the summer sometimes 10-20). Then bike to work (4 miles). I know you guys come from a Crossfit background, and the volume/intensity seems higher there. Also, I do this at 6:30-8:30 am, so I’ve been eating the small pre-workout snack, then breakfast after the workout, lunch, and dinner. No extra meal. Any thoughts?

  14. Paige 7 October, 2011 at 11:49 am #

Just realized “combo of a few exercises” is a bit vague. So as an example, today was a deadlift day so we worked up to 5 sets of heavy triples. Then we did 3 rounds alternating Buelers (6 per side) and heavy bent over rows (8-12). Then another short combo of 1 minute of sandbag clean and presses (heavy) and 1 minute of roller burpees.

Would love to join in for this Whole 30 to shut down my pregnancy allowed indulgences (chocolate, nuts & extra fruit) and get back to better eating. My baby is 8 weeks old. Sleep is only interrupted briefly once per night. I am bfeeding her 100%. So can (should) I even do this?

  16. HeatherS 8 October, 2011 at 11:40 am #

I’m thinking the change will be to allow some non-gluten, non-wheat starches perhaps? Like quinoa or white rice? I will be joining in on this Whole30 as well. I’ve attempted a couple of Whole30s but never quite made it (small slips). I am convinced this is the one!!!!

  17. Melissa @ Whole9 9 October, 2011 at 4:16 pm #

@Paige: It sounds like your workouts are high intensity, but that you’re not ripping through massive amounts of carbohydrate during your activity, either. A PWO protein source + small amount of carbs are probably appropriate – protein being the priority. We’re working on a PWO carb post right now that should help you clarify recommendations for you personally, but that probably won’t be up on the site for a few weeks. Stay tuned.

@Jennifer: We’re not doctors, but plenty of folks have testified that the Whole30 led to even better milk production and happier, less fussy babies. If your only indulgences are chocolate, nuts and extra fruit, it doesn’t sound like the Whole30 will be much of a stretch for you anyway, right? As always, however, check with your doctor before making any dietary changes. (That’s our formal disclaimer.)

@HeatherS: You’ll have to wait and see – but I wouldn’t hold your breath for any starches, even those that are gluten-free. Regardless, I also believe this is the one for you! Join us in October.

    Best,
    Melissa

  18. Becca 9 October, 2011 at 5:11 pm #

@Jennifer (my BFF) – I began the Whole30 at 3 weeks postpartum. My little guy is turning 8 weeks this week. I didn’t have a problem breastfeeding 100%, but then again, I didn’t limit fruits and nuts. I ate a good share of nuts and more fruits than I should have, but I was getting off gluten and sugar (prego indulgences). I may do another Whole 30 and omit the nuts and limit the fruits, too, but that shouldn’t impeded milk production. Plus, I will still keep eating coconut and avocados for fat. Like my mama (BF 7 kids) always said “veggies and lots of water make the milk.” As a side note, now that I am working out more, sometimes I do supplement with herbal teas (fenugreek, Mother’s milk, etc.) and drink LOTS & LOTS of water. Good luck!

  19. Molly 10 October, 2011 at 12:42 pm #

@Jennifer — I am exclusively breastfeeding a now 7-month-old, and I recently finished a Whole30. My milk production actually seemed to *increase*. Like Becca, I made sure to drink a ton of water and I ate ample amounts of fruit, nuts, and fats so that I wouldn’t lose too much weight too fast (but I ended up losing 12 pounds anyhow).

    Hey, Melissa,

I’m signed up for the (rescheduled) workshop at Bowie on 10/29 but I want to start the Whole30 on 10/24. Does the Success Guide come with the workshop, or will I need to purchase that separately regardless?

    Thanks!

  21. Melissa @ Whole9 12 October, 2011 at 9:27 am #

    Mindy,

We offer the Success Guides at workshops at a 50% discount – $20. If you want to start the Whole30 before then, email me so I can set you up with the Guide at the workshop discount. melissa(at)whole9life(dot)com.

Good timing. I wanted to do a paleo challenge again for my CF box before the end of the year, so thanks for organizing. I’m starting this week since I have my annual physical on 10/31, and I want to clean up – and sleep more than 5-6 hrs a night – before getting my blood work done. I’ve been 80/20 (closer to 60/40) for too long with too many cheats, so it’s time to get back on track.

  23. Bethann 13 October, 2011 at 5:25 am #

So, a second guess. If not raw dairy in moderation, then I’m thinking pastured pork. Those are my two guesses.

I’m officially starting today. I’ve been mostly paleo since my first Whole30 back in Feb, which CHANGED MY LIFE. But I’ve fallen a little further from the wagon lately and having a hard time getting back on. Have done really well the last couple of weeks, but now am kicking it in. Today marks 6 weeks till Thanksgiving. I notice big differences when I eat any sugar or grains, and it does not take much for my sugar monster to kick in and take over. I just do so much better mentally and physically if I just steer clear altogether. So, six weeks for me.

I’m looking forward to doing this with a community when your official Whole30 for the group starts up!

  24. Marcia 14 October, 2011 at 10:52 pm #

I had a Klondike bar at work today (an employer reward to employees) and that led to cheetos and a coke. I haven’t had junk like that in the 6 weeks since I started eating Paleo. Instead of the shame I probably would have felt before, I just feel fear. I came home and bought the Success Guide and plan to do a Whole30 right away. Sugar is so powerful!

Well, I haven’t killed myself and it’s good to know I can recognize the edge of the cliff when I walk up to it.

  25. Lauren 21 October, 2011 at 10:36 am #

Is 5.0 out yet. I want to join this Whole 30. Is there a place to “sign up”?

  26. Melissa @ Whole9 21 October, 2011 at 10:44 am #

@Bethann – you were close! It’s clarified butter/ghee, which is technically dairy. Well done!

@Marcia – it’s a slippery slope, isn’t it? That kind of food can just suck you right in. I bet you felt like junk afterwards! We ALL fall off the wagon from time to time, but what’s important is how you handle the situation. Glad to see you jumping right back on board!

@Lauren – the Whole30 Version 5.0 is launching officially on MONDAY, October 24th! You can “register” in the comments of that post, stating your intention to join and complete the program. Our Whole30 Success Guide has already been updated with the new rules, if you feel like you need a little more help with the program.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday’s Version 5.0 launch!

    Melissa
