The Whole Community
We recently received disappointing news from CrossFit Headquarters that our nutrition workshops can’t be promoted on the Affiliate Blog – even those workshops being hosted by other CrossFit affiliates. Which got Dallas thinking… what other resources do health and fitness minded people have to find event information? Where can our readers go to see workshops, clinics, seminars and competitions sponsored by organizations, gyms and independent fitness professionals both within and outside of CrossFit… all in one place? After careful consideration and research, he discovered, well, that kind of place just doesn’t exist. And after discussing it with me, we decided, IT TOTALLY SHOULD.
Welcome to the Whole Community, a comprehensive health and fitness events calendar. The Whole Community is designed to provide one convenient location for our readers to find upcoming health and fitness-related events across the world – and it’s totally and completely FREE. Our only goal is to bring like-minded, resourceful, knowledgeable people together in a manner that benefits the community as a whole.
We’ve already received buy-in from some brilliant people with tons of knowledge to share, promoting events like Olympic Lifting clinics, nutrition seminars, Max Effort Black Box presentations and virtual fitness workshops. The calendar may look a little bare right now, but that’s only because we rolled it out to such a selective group behind the scenes. As of today, however, we’re ready to take it live, and are accepting event submissions. We have the opportunity to create some fantastic synergy here, spreading the good health and fitness word in a way that wasn’t previously possible. So send us your event details now, and check back often, as we’ll be updating the calendar as fast as we can.
Please refer to the below FAQ for more details. And on behalf of Dallas and myself, thank you in advance for contributing to and participating in our new community venture!
Whole Community FAQ
Q:How do I use the event calendar?
A:Find your geographic area and click on the text header. A listing of events will expand, in chronological order. Each event listing includes the date, title and presenter, location and a link to more details.
Q:Colorado isn’t technically in the southwest, you know.
A:Yeah, we know. We broke the country up geographically, to make it easier for you to see things going down in your “local” area. It’s somewhat arbitrary, so you may need to browse a few different regions to get the full picture of what’s being offered.
Q:Who can submit events to the Whole Community?
A:We want to hear from CrossFit affiliate owners, non-affiliated gyms, health and fitness clubs, and trainers and coaches. You don’t have to be a big deal coach or Globo-gym owner to participate – if you’ve got something good to offer the community, we want to hear about it.
Q:What kind of events are eligible for the calendar?
A:You can submit health and fitness related special events – like a workshop, clinic, seminar, or competition.
Q:Is there anything you won’t accept?
A:Actually, yes. For one, we won’t be posting any CrossFit HQ events here. CrossFit has their own event listing, so we won’t be duplicating any trainer or specialty certifications, Games competitions, or anything else sponsored by CrossFit Headquarters.
Also, this isn’t the place to advertise a free weekly class, a birthday pot-luck, or your new book club (even if the first book you read is Starting Strength). While our intention is to make this place as open and all-inclusive as possible, we also don’t want to water it down with recurring events, non-fitness related happenings or things that would appeal only to folks in your neighborhood.
Q:I’ve got something good! How do I submit my event to the Whole Community?
A:Use the Event Submission Form at the bottom of the Community page. Just enter a few key details, hit “submit” and you’re done! Note, we don’t have time to proofread or scour the web for links, so make sure the information you provide is complete and accurate.
Q:Why can’t I send you a long and detailed description of my event?
A:We’re trying to keep the information clean and simple, and lengthy descriptions would muck up our format. But if you include a link with your submission, our readers will be able to click through and discover everything they’ll need to know.
Q:I noticed an error in my event (or my event details changed). What do I do?
A:Email community@whole9life.com and we’ll fix it up pronto.
Q:Why does the calendar format look a little funky in Internet Explorer?
A:Because you should be using Firefox, or Safari, or Chrome. Seriously, we know there are a few quirks in IE, and we’re trying to work through them.
Q:I’ve got some feedback for the Whole Community. Do you want to hear it?
A:Heck, yes! This site is BY the community, FOR the community, so if you’ve got a way to make it better, we’re all ears. Thoughts on improving the site design? A great idea to promote the Whole Community? General comments about the concept? Send a note to community@whole9life.com.

Hello,
So my wife is a coach for pre and post-natal exercise and is starting online seminars, is this the sort of thing you would be looking for?
Neil
Neil, we’re not “shopping” for any specific type of event – we just want to give folks within this remarkable community a chance to connect with each other on a variety of topics without censorship. Since a lot of our readers are CrossFit affiliate owners and athletes, it makes sense that the “flavour” of the seminars and competitions posted on the Whole Community would reflect the interests of a fitness-minded community, but it’s certainly not limited to that. Your wife’s seminars are welcome here.
Guys,
This is a great idea. I am not surprised your “Psuedo-Science” is not being sponsored by HQ. As a follower of Whole9, Robb Wolf, Catalyst Athletics, Fitness Conduit, as well as the main site you may be treading on dangerous territory and face the same fate as Robb and Greg Everett. I like it. Bringing the best to the masses is what this community is all about. Bravo.
Kevin
@Kevin: You’re right – bringing the best to the masses is what this community SHOULD be about. Please understand that this venture isn’t about our affiliate, or HQ, or anything OTHER than our genuine desire to bring good people together. Which is why we really hope other CrossFit affiliates will participate, and share their good stuff with EVERYONE!
Rest assured, however, we know exactly the territory we’re standing on.
Thanks for the support!
Melissa
The Gym in Summersville, WV, will be hosting an indoor regatta (C2 2KM race) on March 20, 2010, beginning at noon. All are welcome.
The Gym is run by one of the nations top master’s level powerlifters, Jim Adkins, and holds several events each year. The events include Powerlifting seminars, Strongman Events, SSST competitions, and rowing eventing.
Love the blog and I hope the Whole Community takes off.
Adam
Not surprising they won’t do it for you at all…. keep doing your own thing and be a success in spite of them.
Hey, I am sorry to hear that CFHQ isn’t supportive of your efforts, but I am not surprised. CFHQ tries to make life difficult for those who are their brightest stars. Dallas and Melissa you two are the real deal and your Whole30 saved my life. So Congratulations on the Whole Community thingie and what a great idea.
I look forward attending one of your seminars with my wife.
Respectfully, while we truly appreciate the support… We will not host a CrossFit-bashing contest here, nor will we allow the focus of this effort to stray from the positive. CrossFit affiliates (owners, coaches, trainers and clients) and the CF community has been very, very good to us, and we hope we’ve been good to them in turn by sharing our information in a free and open venue. The Whole Community isn’t about “railing against the man”… we just want to grow and develop the community we’ve been building here (from Urban Gets Diesel, CrossFit 603 AND the Whole9) in a collaborative, innovative way.
Thanks, Jay and Steve, for the support. (And Steve, I really hope you can come see us soon!)
I find it interesting that they are willing to post other types of events that seem to overlap with offered HQ seminars, but not yours on the affiliate site. Actually I find it to be damn unfair, but interesting feels like the neutral, more appropriate term. Looking forward to your online seminar in March, keep up the great work.
