I spent all of last week in Oregon and northern California, affiliate tramping and working on some fun and exciting new projects. We went to visit Matt and Donna Dyson (MaD CrossFit) before their big move to New Zealand at the end of the month, and ended up doing a whirlwind tour of the area. I put 4″ on my box jump (and a whole host of bruises on my shins) with Lu Crenshaw at CrossFit Allegiance in Medford, OR, worked the box squat and snatch with Nicki Violetti at NorCal Strength and Conditioning (Robb Wolf’s joint), nailed some pretty 93# cleans from the high hang at CrossFit East Sac and watched Dallas jump on the Koffin at San Francisco CrossFit.
More on all of these shenanigans later in the week – I’m trying to shake the effects of a red-eye, a time change and a momentary lapse of good judgment (when I told Dallas I’d go 30 days caffeine-free with him). In the meantime, congratulations to all you 30 day-ers who are still holding strong. There are still people jumping on the bus, so keep posting to comments and keep encouraging, supporting and inspiring.
Mischief at CrossFit NorCal… stay tuned to see what brought the CHPs.

First! Also, today is day 6 of 30-Days #2. Feeling okay, although yesterday my energy level totally crashed. I wonder if it's just about getting adjusted. Anyway, still as clean as can be.
I want video of Dallas jumping on the Coffin Byers. Or else.
Taking video of Dallas jumping on really cool, really tall stuff was my full-time job last week. I'm going to make a montage. Everyone loves a good montage.
YES! Montage Music!
Europe-Final countdown.
@Jake Yep and make sure you eat enough fat.
Jake: The first week was hard for me, too, but it seemed to level after that. Keep trucking through and you'll start feeling better in no time! :)
Byers: you're my hero. 30 days without caffeine? Total badass bravery. I'm a wreck without my two massive cups in the morning.
Hey Melissa,
So jealous of your trip! Just thought I'd lend you some support in the caffeine thing. While 100% Paleo didn't stick for my 30 days, I was able to kick my caffeine addiction. I now happily drink decaf and on the weekends I'm totally fine training with no coffee in me. It took me about 1 and a half to two weeks to fully get over the effects of kicking caffeine but it is so worth it, especially if my adrenals are starting to get back to normal. Good luck!
Thanks for the words of support, Mark. I did this once before, in November of last year, just to reset my caffeine clock. After hearing Lu and Robb talk about adrenal fatigue last week, it's probably not a bad idea to take a cold turkey approach once in a while. You never know how something is affecting your training, recovery, body comp and sleep until you drop it from your daily intake, right?
Today, however, I'm tired, headache-y and generally crankypants. Ick.
Hey Melissa,
I decided this weekend to do a 30 day caffeine-free detox. So I go to check your site and whaddaya know? Great minds think alike…I just wish my head didn't hurt so bad.
Coffee my sweet dark mother…I wish I could quit you.
Welcome back!
I have ZERO intention of quitting coffee for good. I just need to reset my clock and give my system a break. But as my new NorCal t-shirt says, 'Gluten = Death, Caffeine = Life". So I'll be back, Wicked Joe God of Thunder Dark Roast. I'll be back.
hey moxy-boss. i haven't been over this way for a while. my question has nothing to do w/ your post but i was curious as to what your 1rm numbers are? especially for deadlifts b/c you love them so much. what is your current 1rm for deadlift and back squat? thanks!
Psst….honey don't forget you stuck a single arm shift to balance SEVERAL times…we want pics of the shins…oh wait I have some!!!! Love you!!!
I'm 2 weeks Paleo
(going great!) but with coffee.
Because we have adrenal(s) I hope I can just rest them one at a time because I just don't see myself ever giving up coffee…for as long as I have breath anyhow.
@Elizabeth: Hmmm… Is this kind of like, "Why should we listen to you if your deadlift sucks?" :) I haven't pulled 1RMs in recent months, but my DL in May was 215# (at a body weight of 130#). Not sure what my back squat 1RM is, we don't back squat often, but we front squat all day long and that's 140#. My power clean is 115#, my squat clean is… also 115# (huh), my box jump is now 38", and I recently came in first in a vegetable chopping contest at Lu Crenshaw's house.
@Lu: I've got my shift to balance pics… but I'm not posting pics of my shins. They're still so messed up I don't dare wear a dress to work yet.
@John F: Word.
@Melissa Byers….oh baby you know that I pulled away at the end…once I knew it was a race I was all in!!!
@Elizabeth, Melissa will be pulling a whole lot more on DL the next go round, she was rockin them at my place!!!
Loves to the 603 from the 541
Melissa, if expect me to go strict paleo, you can give up coffee for 30 days – that's just one thing for you to cut, I've gotta cut a bazillions things the more I look at it.
